Above are examples of the main META tags you should have on each and every
page in your website. You keywords, Title and Description should be custom
for each and every page on your website. This is how you ensure getting rated on
many of your keywords as it is basically impossible to write a index.html page
optimized for 20 different keywords.
So you are trying to break it down. Maybe your index page is optimized
for 3 or 4 keywords in the Title and Description, and other pages do the
same. In the big view, your entire site will have pages that will be
optimized for the appropriate keywords if you do your job correctly.
If You are interested in getting a little more background on Meta tags and
what they mean

We will now just take you through the Tags that are most important that we
have listed above.
<TITLE>Free Report: 10 Secrets of Your Health and Wellness</TITLE>
The first tag that we put in our Header is the Title tag. this is
actually not a META Tag but it fits right in with them. It is a Critical
tag to have in your header for the Search Engines. You simply surround the
Titles you created in the tags as per the format above and you are done.
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Health and wellness FREE REPORT
($49.95Value) Customized for YOU. Learn about Weight Loss Diets,
Diet Pills, Prostate Cancer, Heart Disease. YOU decide.
What do YOU need to know.">
The next Most important tag is the META Description tag. In this tag,
again you take the format from above and substitute your Description for the one
that is there. The above example uses the Description from DiamondRain's
Working Example.
<META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="health, weight loss, diet, prostate cancer,
heart disease, nutrition, retirement, immune system, wellness, compensation,
dietary supplements, home networking, diet pill, st john wort,
sport nutrition, antioxidant, food nutrition, vitamin and mineral,
weight loss diet, supplements, weight loss pill">
And here it is, the one you did all the work for. Your Keyword META
Tag. Once again, just copy your list of keywords separated by a comma and
space as shown above and put it into the same format as shown above.
<META NAME="Author" CONTENT="Dennis Wilson - dennis@internetnextstep.com - http://www.internetnextstep.com">
This tag is where you can add in a bit more publicity for yourself if you are
doing work for someone else. You can also put a message about your company
that you only want technical types to see in this space.
<META NAME="Robots" CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW"> class="bodyTextHeaderBlack"
This tag is not always necessary, but is very effective for controlling the
search engine robot. This tag can tell the search engine to index the
page, or not index the page. It can also tell it to follow the links on
the page and index them, or not to follow the links on the page. In the
above case it is telling the robot to index this page and follow the
links. The various combinations you can use are:
- all - would tell the robot to index all the pages and follow the links.
- none - tells the robot not to index any pages or follow any links.
- index - tells the robot to index this page.
- noindex -
tells the robot not to index this page, but to follow the links.
- follow - tells the spider to follow the links.
- nofollow - tells the spider not to follow the links.
- You can use the above in various combinations to completely control what
the robot does.
<META NAME="Rating" CONTENT="General">
This is a rating on your site for content. General, Adult, 14+ etc.
<META NAME="Revisit" CONTENT="30">
</HEAD>
This tells the Robot to come and Revisit this page in 30 days and reindex
it. This allows your site to always have it's most current content
indexed. Of course when the Spider comes back, if there are new links to
new pages, the new pages will get picked up and indexed on the spiders return.
It is best to set this at thirty days or longer if you use this tag.
There are a few more META Tags, but these are the most important.
VERY IMPORTANT
Some spiders do not recognize META Tags, so it is important to include your
Description in Comment Tags to make sure it gets found by the maximum number of
Robots.

Finally, there are a number of software packages out there to help you with
metatags. You may want to refer to them after you have created your Titles
and Descriptions by using our tutorial.
At this point you have two routes to go. If you already had a site, and
you just did the keyword and Metatags tutorials for an existing site, you may
want to go and resubmit the sites to the search engines right now.
